These photos of NDP Leader Jack Layton were taken by Jade Daniel Sambrook on August 30, 2008, in front of 24 Sussex Drive, the official residence of the Prime Minister of Canada.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper had met individually with each opposition Party Leader to see if they could agree on how to productively move forward during the fall parliamentary session. The Prime Minister, who was leading a minority government at the time, had previously mentioned that Parliament was becoming dysfunctional. He therefore wanted to see if the opposition leaders would be ready to support his agenda.

After the meeting, Jack Layton addressed the throng of media that were impatiently waiting outside, saying that ”the Prime Minister seems intent on quitting his job. I told him if he’s prepared to quit his job he can explain that failure to Canadians”.

A week later, the Prime Minister requested that the Governor General dissolve parliament and a general election was scheduled for October 14, 2008. This ultimately resulted in another minority government for Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
