The closest I’ve ever been to the President of the United States

Not long after being elected President of the United States, Barrack Obama made his first official foreign visit to Canada. This was no surprise, as the first foreign trip of a newly elected President is often to Canada. In fact, it has become somewhat of a tradition in the relationship between these two neighbouring countries.

It was February 19, 2009, and it was a cold winter day in Ottawa much like the cold winter day of the President’s inauguration only one month prior.

For Jade Sambrook there was no debate as to whether this event should be attended to with a camera in hand.

The motorcade arrived on Parliament Hill, and surprisingly the presidential limousine, otherwise known as ”the beast”, was able to fit under the Peace Tower archway. If you’ve ever visited Parliament and seen the Peace Tower archway then you know just how narrow it is.

President Obama was received by Prime Minister Stephen Harper behind a temporary bullet proof glass that had been installed specifically for the occasion. Both leaders waved to the crowd and proceeded to enter the Canadian Parliament.

A few hours later, when President Obama was on his way out of the parliamentary precinct, I was able to shoot a photo of him waving at the crowd from the back seat of the beast. Unfortunately there was a light snow and so the picture is blurred by specks of snow fall, but, I was fortunately able to capture this one moment, where I was as close to the most powerful man of the world as I may ever be.
